Medicare Advantage Changes for 2027: How Agents Can Help Clients Decide Before December 7
In short: Medicare Advantage 2027 changes won’t affect most clients: their plan stays in place and renews on its own January 1. Your job before AEP ends on December 7 is to find the clients who can’t stay put: those whose plan is ending in their county, whose doctors left the network, or whose drug costs or benefits changed. Sort your book now, call those clients first, and document every review.
AEP runs October 15 through December 7. By now, most clients have read their Annual Notice of Change, or set it aside. Many will call to ask one simple question: “Do I need to do anything?”
For most, the honest answer is no. For some, it’s “yes, and soon.” Here’s how to tell the difference quickly and serve both groups well.
Why Are Clients Asking About Medicare Advantage Changes for 2027?
Medicare Advantage is now the choice for most people with Medicare. KFF reports that 55% of eligible beneficiaries were enrolled in Medicare Advantage in 2026.
At the same time, plans change every year. Carriers adjust benefits, networks and service areas based on costs and use. In recent years, some have trimmed extra benefits or pulled plans from certain counties, especially rural ones. Researchers at Johns Hopkins reported that about 1 in 10 Medicare Advantage enrollees faced forced disenrollment in 2026.
That’s why clients in the Southeast, from rural South Carolina to the Georgia and Tennessee mountains, may be hearing about plan changes from friends and neighbors, even when their own plan is fine.
How Do I Sort My Book Before December 7?
Don’t wait for the phone to ring. Spend an hour sorting your Medicare Advantage clients into three groups:
| Group | Who’s in it | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Must act | Plan ending in their county | Call this week and schedule a full review |
| Should review | Doctor or hospital left the network, big drug cost change, or a benefit they use was cut | Call before December 7 |
| Likely stay | Plan renewing, doctors in network, costs steady | A short check-in call, note or email |
Your CRM and carrier notices about 2027 Medicare Advantage changes make the first group easy to find. The second group takes a quick look at each client’s ANOC, doctor list and drug list.
What Should I Check in Each Client’s Plan?
For every client in the “should review” or “likely stay” group, run four quick checks:
- Is the plan still offered in their county for 2027?
- Are their primary care doctor, specialists and preferred hospital still in network?
- Are their prescriptions covered at a workable cost? Run the drug list against the 2027 formulary.
- Are they comfortable with 2027 copays and the out-of-pocket maximum?
If all four answers are yes, the client can stay put. Tell them so, and note it in your CRM. Clients remember the agent who called just to say “you’re all set.”
Our AEP client review checklist goes deeper on networks, extra benefits and total costs.
What Happens When a Client’s Plan Is Ending?
When a plan won’t renew, the carrier must send the member a non-renewal notice before the plan ends. Clients don’t always open it, so check your carrier reports, too.
Walk the client through what comes next:
- They can choose a new plan during AEP. Coverage starts January 1, 2027.
- They get extra time. Clients whose plan is ending also get a Special Enrollment Period that runs through the last day of February.
- Doing nothing has a cost. If they don’t pick a plan, they return to Original Medicare. Unless they get Extra Help, they’ll need to choose a stand-alone Part D plan for drug coverage.
- Medigap may be an option. Clients losing their plan may have a time-limited guaranteed issue right to buy certain Medicare Supplement policies without medical underwriting.
The cleanest path is still a new plan in place before December 7, so there’s no gap or confusion on January 1. Our guide to Medigap vs. Medicare Advantage helps when a client wants to weigh both.
What If a Client’s Doctor Left the Network?
Networks change every year. Some plans are also moving from PPO designs, which allow more provider choice, to HMO designs with more focused networks.
Start with the client’s must-keep doctors and hospitals. Then search 2027 plans in their county for those providers. In many markets, another plan includes them. If no plan does, talk through the trade-offs plainly, including whether a Medicare Supplement plan with a stand-alone Part D plan makes sense.
Can Clients Still Make Changes After December 7?
Some can, but options narrow. Explain them clearly:
- Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1 to March 31): clients already in a Medicare Advantage plan can make a one-time change, either to another Medicare Advantage plan or back to Original Medicare.
- Special Enrollment Periods: certain situations, such as a plan ending or a move, open other windows.
Our Medicare enrollment periods cheat sheet has every window in one place.
As always, follow CMS marketing rules and carrier guidelines, use approved materials, and document a Scope of Appointment as your carriers require.
